Bao Dai was the Emperor of Assam (a province of Indo-China) from 1925 until 1945. (Until he reached eighteen Assam was governed by a regent.) He ascended the throne in 1932 and after the Japanese invasion he acquiesced to their rule. In 1945 he was on good terms with HO CHI MINH and abdicated the throne. He was proclaimed Supreme Counselor of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam by Ho on 2 September 1945. However he soon became dissatisfied with Ho’s regime and left for Hong Kong in July 1946.
